Earthquake emergency in Myanmar
IN SHORT
On March 28, 2025, a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar, causing thousands of deaths, injuries and displacements, as well as severe damage to the country's vital infrastructure. This disaster hit an already fragile context: for years, Myanmar has been marked by internal conflicts, widespread poverty, and serious human rights violations, which had already severely challenged the survival of the civilian population.
Thanks to tax-based 8x1000 funds, the Italian Buddhist Union has committed €500,000 for the reconstruction of some of the areas affected by the earthquake in Myanmar, a country that hosts a rich spiritual tradition of Buddhist origin.
Help us raise funds for reconstruction. Together we will deliver immediate aid — food, water, medical care — and support the rebirth of the hardest-hit communities.

CONTEXT
Myanmar has been facing a deep humanitarian crisis for years. Following the 2021 military coup, the country plunged into a civil war that has displaced over 3.5 million people, with airstrikes and bombings indiscriminately targeting the civilian population. Ethnic divisions, social inequalities and widespread poverty have further worsened the situation, making access to food, medical care, and education extremely difficult for millions of people.

PROBLEM
On March 28, 2025, a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, with the epicenter near Mandalay. Tremors were felt in neighboring countries as well, causing casualties and damage in Thailand, China, Vietnam, India, Laos, and Bangladesh.
The quake caused over 3,700 deaths, more than 5,000 injuries, and around 70,000 new displacements. The tremors destroyed tens of thousands of homes, schools, hospitals, temples, roads, and other essential infrastructure, further worsening an already dire crisis. Moreover, due to the ongoing civil conflict, rescue teams are struggling to access the affected areas, severely hampering relief efforts and making the situation even more desperate.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
In this critical moment, your contribution can make a real difference.
Every donation helps provide essential supplies, hygiene support and safe meals to affected communities. The funds raised support the vital work of ASIA Onlus, a nonprofit organization that has been active in Myanmar for over 10 years.
Beyond addressing the current emergency, donations also fund medium- and long-term initiatives aimed at sustainable and lasting impact. Together, we will help rebuild affected communities, starting with schools. ASIA is already working to repair and reconstruct 28 schools, while also supporting the introduction of key skills and tools for agricultural self-sufficiency, water collection and distribution, and the sustainable use of resources.
The Italian Buddhist Union has already allocated €500,000 from 8x1000 funds, to support the Burmese population during this dramatic time. Beyond humanitarian reasons, UBI has a special connection to this land, where Buddhism has deep roots and continues to flourish after centuries.
Here, where hope is being severely tested, your generous gesture is a concrete sign of solidarity and a step toward rebirth.
